Research on Transdermal Magnesium Absorption:

Studies prove that magnesium is absorbed through the skin via hair follicles. A study conducted by the University of Queensland provides a truthful conclusion on transdermal magnesium absorption. The study showed that magnesium can, in fact, be absorbed through the skin via a topical cream, transdermal patch or spray. While antidotal evidence for magnesium absorption through the skin has always been strong, this is the first evidence of research to prove the theory in a controlled, clinical study.

Epsom salt baths for example, have been used to treat sore muscles after exercise and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. However, many health practitioners were not convinced, as the mechanism for topical magnesium absorption was not fully researched until now.

The University of Queensland study found that the skin’s hair follicles played a big part in how topical magnesium permeates the outer layers of the skin. Once the magnesium permeates through the outer layer of skin, it is transported to the underlying muscle layer.

Transdermal Magnesium Versus Oral:

In a 2010 study published by the European Journal of Nutraceutical Research to determine the impact of transdermal magnesium treatment on serum levels and whole body calcium to magnesium (CaMg) ratios, researchers found an average increase of 59.5% in the cellular magnesium levels of 89% of participants after twelve weeks of treatment with 31% saturated magnesium chloride solution.

To achieve the same results via oral route using the same concentration of active ingredients, you’d have to undergo treatment for a period of 9 to 24 months.

The story went on to say “Traditional methods of administering medicine, such as tablets or capsules, have to pass through the stomach, and, unfortunately, the action of stomach acids and digestive enzymes often reduces uptake and bioavailability so significantly that very little may actually reach the bloodstream,” said the researchers.

“Bypassing the stomach and liver means a much greater percentage of the active ingredient goes straight into the bloodstream where it’s needed.” Magnesium deficiency in the body can cause a disruption of calcium absorption by the body’s cells. Researchers say that deficiency has also been linked to cardiovascular, skeletal, and central nervous system disorders. More proven research shows that between 68 and 75% of individuals in the United States do not consume the daily recommended amount of dietary magnesium. Furthermore, around 19% of Americans do not consume even half of the government’s recommended daily intake of magnesium.
